Brooklands Lodge is said to be one of the first private residences in the Brooklands area, built in 1851 by an eminent local surgeon Peter Royle. Originally, known as Vernon Lodge, the house boasted its own coach house and piggery, but nowadays, the only pork to be found is the delicious, locally cured bacon on the breakfast table!
As the area around Brooklands and Marsland Road is flat and at that time was mainly given to market gardens, might explain why Peter Royle had the Lodge built in a unique “Austrian” style, in order that he could have an elevated view over the surrounding countryside.
According to local records, dated 1898, the lodge was originally called Vernon and not Brooklands Lodge. We understand that the name change came about some twenty years ago purely for alphabetic reasons when the previous owners changed the purpose of the building and to ensure that it the business had a prominent position in the Yellow Pages!!
Today, the Lodge retains many of the original features including the Latin salutation for welcome, Sal-Ve that has been set into the main threshold the step in brass lettering. The entrance hall features the impressive Royle family coat of arms, colourfully depicted in stained glass. Standing guard over the car park is a stone lions head and the owner’s initials P&MR dated 1851.
